Is metaverse will replace the Internet? | Sanjay Pasari

The metaverse, which was previously exclusively depicted in science fiction films and books, is currently in development and on track to revolutionize the internet. You might be asking if the metaverse will entirely replace the internet in light of this. But first, you should understand what the Metaverse is. So, let's first find out.

Describe the Metaverse

In our imaginations, the Metaverse is all about taking a stroll around the virtual universe or playing video games. Basically, a virtual theme park tour!

Although not incorrect, this is only a minor part of the Metaverse. The goal of the metaverse is not to engage in virtual world gaming. You are unable to pause, reset, or stop.

Users may experience real-time events without travelling to a certain location since it is more like the actual world with no restrictions.

Where Exactly the Metaverse lies?

The development of a practical version of the metaverse will take years, if not decades. It is currently merely a fancy idea. According to Mark Zuckerberg, the metaverse won't be a common technology for another 5 to 10 years. The release date, however, cannot yet be forecasted by anyone. Because the metaverse depends on a network of interconnected services and technology, it is difficult for one organization to do all of that in a short amount of time.

At the moment, we can see some early adopters of the metaverse in VR goods or games like Roblox and Fortnite, but with time, we'll start to see more improvements or early iterations of the metaverse. In other words, with every year that goes by, we get closer to experiencing a new internet era powered by immersive technology.

Is Metaverse really replace the Internet?

Let's clear up any misunderstandings we have about the metaverse and the internet now that we are aware of what it is and where it is at this time. If you imagine the metaverse as it is shown in the movie Ready Player One, you could believe it to be the internet's replacement. The metaverse is not designed to replace the internet; rather, it is supposed to "enhance/expand" its capabilities. In actuality, access to the metaverse requires extremely fast internet. Services for metaverse development may be used to create and set up social media, games, and even real estate on the metaverse.

“Since the internet is necessary for the metaverse to work, it cannot be replaced by the metaverse. Instead, the metaverse is constructed on top of Web3, which makes use of blockchain technology, and acts as an extension of the internet” says Sanjay Pasari, senior year student of IIT Pune.

Simply put, you will be able to do regular online activities in the same manner that you do now. However, you will be able to improve your internet consumption experience if you utilize VR headsets or glasses.

Accessing the metaverse requires specific technologies

A feature-rich virtual environment will be created via the metaverse, a linked system of immersive technology and services. Consider using the example of a smartphone. Because so many technologies and services are integrated into a single smartphone, you can perform a lot of things with it. The same holds true for the metaverse, which is also the fundamental reason it hasn't been realized yet.

The following are the key tools or technologies needed to reach the metaverse:

  • Immersive technologies that enable settings like virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), extended reality (XR), and others.
  • speed internet for real-time multimedia streaming and other services.
  • Cryptocurrency wallets for use in digital transactions between various metaverse services.
  • Other technologies could be needed, however the ones mentioned above are the most important ones.
